BERLIN, Md.- Some businesses in Worcester and Wicomico counties are stepping up to provide lunches for students while schools are closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Baked Desserts and Cafe in Berlin wants to help kids who rely on school provided meals. The owner says she's meeting with church leaders and educators to help identify which students would benefit the most.
"We want to make sure that our effort is organized, and it reaches the people who really need the help," owner Robin Tomaseli says.
The cafe is accepting non-perishable food donations and gift cards to Food Lion. Pick-up times and locations have not yet been set but the cafe posted on its Facebook page that those details should be coming this weekend. For more, click here.
The Iron Horse in Willards shared on Facebook that it was inspired to act after Tomaseli's initiative. The restaurant in Willards will be donating boxed lunches for students starting on Monday. They're also accepting non-perishable food donations to send home with students. The pick-up location will be the Willards Lions Club Monday-Friday 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Boxcar40 in Pittsville is also pitching in to feed students during the school closures. They posted online, saying they're working with the Pittsville Vol. Fire Department to set up a distribution point for students in need, especially anyone from Pittsville Elementary and Middle school. They're looking for non-perishable, healthy food donations, Food Lion gift cards, and help from volunteers.
