Ocean City Extends Boardwalk Mask Requirement

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Ocean City is extending its face covering requirement on the boardwalk.

Masks or other facial coverings will be required throughout the month of September. Masks were first required to be worn on the boardwalk on July 31. Once the calendar turned over to September, the order expired.

On Monday, the Ocean City Town Council voted to continue requiring masks on the boardwalk. The mask order will expire Sept. 30.

Some people, like Michael Nolen, say that having to wearing a mask on the boardwalk is a small price to pay for safety.

"I think if we can keep moving forward, I think it's a great thing. We all just gotta do our part," says Nolen.

Despite masks being required on the boardwalk for over a month, there are still some people who choose not to wear one.

"Because we’re out and about, I don’t find it as important on the boardwalk. And there’s hardly anyone here," says George Hanna, who was not wearing a mask.

Those who do not wear a mask on the boardwalk can receive a citation from the Ocean City Police Department. Mayor Rick Meehan says that the citations are only used in extreme circumstances.

"What the police department has tried to do is do this through education rather than punitive action," says Meehan.

When the order requiring masks on the boardwalk runs out at the end of the month, the Ocean City Town Council can choose to extend the order a second time.
