5th Annual Pinewood Derby Winter Classic YouTube

Sean takes a trip to meet with Clint Moore from the Epworth Christian School to learn about the upcoming Pinewood Derby classic taking place soon.

The history of the Pinewood Derby dates back to 1953, when a father of a boy scout was looking for an activity for the scouts to do that incorporated their fathers. Since the boys weren’t old enough for a Soap Box Derby, he invented the Pinewood.

Moore’s daughter, was actually the reason that he got involved; when Epworth hosted its first derby she was in third grade at the school and was very interested in participating. The two ended up building a purple car that was sleeping beauty themed, and it beat out all the other racers!

Fast forward a few years, and now they are building and racing cars in leagues across the country.

“It’s definitely a science,” said Moore. “You can have the body style of what you want your car to look like in a couple hours if you know what you’re doing.”

Racing is a huge part of Moore’s life, he even owns a full size racing vehicle, he takes to the track. The event will feature food, door prizes, and over 100 cars racing for the championship belt.
