Angela Bivens was already having a good morning when she arrived at her church in Laurel, Delaware.

But Angela’s morning got even better when, in front of friends and family, she was told she was a 2017 Jefferson Awards winner.

Angela says it was her experience as a teen mom that inspired her to help young women in the same situation at the Sussex Pregnancy Center.

“When I got old enough and got some sense about me I decided to go back and then put something into those same young ladies so that they would know…pregnancy doesn’t end your life, it makes your life better and you can actually better the person that you’re giving life to,” Angela said.

And as the church youth leader of Grace Tabernacle of Deliverance, Angela really has a way of connecting with children. Angela’s friend, Brenda Smith, said of her interaction with children, “She cuts up with them. You know they have fun together. They know when’s she’s serious also. But they’re able to, she’s able to come down to their level. They are able to talk to her.”

Volunteering at the church, the pregnancy center and the Western Sussex Boys & Girls Club as well, you may be wondering how she does it all. She said, “You know there’s this thing I heard of called sleep. I’m still waiting to see what that feels like. I just push. I really can’t tell you how I do it. I just do it. It’s me. I guess it’s in my nature.”

Angela’s daughter, Aliyah Pierce, said of her mother, “We actually have to slow her down like me and my stepdad because she will keep going and keep going she’s like an Energizer bunny. She keeps going and keeps going until she is forced to stop.”

That’s why Angela Bivens is a WBOC Jefferson Awards winner.
