Some of the flooding has started to dry up from this most recent storm but it has left a lot to clean up.
Many places did not get hit too hard, however, because of the preparation they took before the storm.
If you needed to evacuate your home immediately, do you think you would grab everything that you would need? A study shows that only about half of Americans have an evacuation kit ready.
For the personal stuff, pet owners should prepare to grab food, leashes and colored photos of them if they get lost. You should also grab comfort items for children if you have them, as well as prescriptions and clothes.
Besides the personal items, an emergency kit is extremely important to have for unexpected emergency events, and now is the time to prepare.
Megan Holotik, a State Farm insurance agent in Cambridge, talks about a few things you need to be aware of in case of an emergency.
She says it is important to know where water comes in you house if it tends to flood, make sure your gutters are clean and directing rain water far away from your house, and to make sure you have a sump pump if your house does flood.
To prepare for fires, there are many places you should put fire alarms/detectors.
Hear the beep when you sleep:
- Every bedroom
- Outside each sleeping area
- Every level of the home
- Larger homes, more alarms
You may also want to think about carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
Detectors need to be replaced about every 10 months or so, and you must check the batteries often.
