Tails were wagging left and right when a WBOC News crew stopped by the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club to surprise Bev Horner with the news that she was a 2017 WBOC Jefferson Awards winner.

“No way, no way,” Bev said. “Thank you….I’m overwhelmed why I would be picked as one of these people.”

And Bev isn’t overwhelmed often.

“She spends more hours volunteering than she probably does sleeping, so she deserves some recognition for all the hard work she puts in,” said Jim Leether of Pets on Wheels of Delmarva, Inc.

Bev Horner

Six years ago, Bev became the Wicomico County coordinator for Pets on Wheels, a program in which therapy dogs and their handlers visit nursing homes, schools and other facilities to provide comfort to those who need it most. When Bev took over, there were only six teams visiting five facilities. Today there are 61 teams that visit 28 facilities across Delmarva.

“It makes my heart happy. It really makes my heart happy,” Bev said. “I love to give back to the community. I love to share my dogs and I just think it’s a wonderful thing that I do. I mean I just love it.”

Bev and her golden retrievers, Toby and Sully, have made more than 2,000 visits with Pets on Wheels.

Donald Ashe of Pets on Wheels said of Bev, “She always you know that she’s enjoying what she’s doing. I mean it is just a pleasure volunteering with her and being part of her program. I mean she just sucks you in, you know it is a lot of fun.”

That’s why Bev Horner is a 2017 WBOC Jefferson Awards winner.
