It’s a celebration of birds of prey this weekend at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County, Maryland.

The refuge is holding its 17th annual Eagle Festival from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 11.

Blackwater is home to one of the largest breeding populations of bald eagles in the United States. Every March, the refuge holds the Eagle Festival to celebrate America’s national symbol.

“The event raises awareness about the refuge, birds of prey and in particular, bald eagles,” said Ray Paterra, visitor services manager for Blackwater. “It’s a great learning experience.”

A variety of activities will be offered for visitors including live eagle and other birds of prey programs, kid’s activities, kid’s bird box construction, eagle prowls, Wildlife Drive tours, wildlife exhibits, live bird exhibits, and food all day.

“All of the events are free,” Paterra said. “And there’s something for everybody, whether you’re a kid or an adult.”

It’s going to be a chilly weekend, but Paterra said the refuge is prepared for the cold temperatures. He said many of the festival’s activities will be held in comfortably heated tents.
