For the first time ever, Possum Point Players will be performing Hairspray beginning Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Using performers from Southern Delaware and Maryland, Director Michael J. Murnin says this performance is a period piece. Known as a big and bold musical about a girl’s inspiring dream to dance, this family-friendly musical is piled bouffant high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.
“We are really trying to stress the desegregation of the community that happened at the time,” Murnin said. “Although we have made great strides with it, we still have a ways to go which is why this performance is relevant today, we’re not there yet but we’re on the way.”
The performance is set in 1962 in Baltimore, Md., and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has a dream to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When this dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her hairdo.
Murnin says this performance focuses more on the 1988 film Hairspray by John Waters.
“The Broadway show had a lot of glitz, this performance still has a lot of glitz but we’ve gone back to the John Water’s film and really strive to go back to the original view of it all,” Murnin said.
A lot of people are very familiar with the movie and Murnin says the same people who wrote music for the movie rewrote some of the music in this performance. Murnin also noted that people will recognize parts of the movie in this performance of the original stage production.
The Possum Point Players’ performance begins Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and will run until Sunday Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. on weekends.
“The tickets are selling very briskly and we are well over 3/4 full,” Murnin said. “If the shows are filling up, we have entertained adding additional performances.”
Murnin mentions the cast members have a lot of community theater and professional experience, and a lot have worked with Clearspace Theatre in Rehoboth Beach, Del. over the years.
“We have a very seasoned cast and the young people have been trained in the theater schools locally,” Murnin said.
