The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the seventh annual “Peace in the Park” event held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19, at the Salisbury City Park.
Hundreds of people, along with a diverse array of religious, community and civic groups, turned out for the event, which was first held in Salisbury in 2009 in celebration of the annual United Nations’ International Day of Peace. One of the highlights of this year’s event was the dedication of a permanent peace pole, which features the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages. Other highlights included live music, a drum circle, dance groups, children’s activities and information tables.
Some of the churches/religious groups on hand for Saturday’s event included Asbury United Methodist Church, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hindu Temple of the Eastern Shore, Salisbury Buddhist Community, Snow Hill Mennonite Church, Wicomico River Friends and Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salisbury.
Some of the civic and community organizations that participated included the Business Economic and Community Outreach Network of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business at Salisbury University, the Peace Alliance of the Lower Shore, Salisbury University’s Center for Conflict Resolution, the Salisbury Police Department, Veterans for Peace and the Wicomico Environmental Trust.
