Each year, thousands of people of all ages get an up close and personal look at life around and in the Pocomoke River through exhibits at the Delmarva Discovery Center.
This year at the Delmarva Discovery Center, there is new life to see. Mac and Tuck are two American River Otters at the Discovery Center and although they cause a bit of mischief, the pair is a welcome addition.
Hannah Murphy, wildlife behavior specialist who works with the otters says they were relocated to the Discovery Center because they were causing some mischief on a crayfish farm on Louisiana.
Specialist at the Discovery Center are teaching Mac and Tuck mental stimulation behaviors, which help the otters think creatively, get them excited, and prevent boredom.
Hannah says each otter has their own distinct personality.
“It’s really just a learning experience and you have to get to know the otters to know what they may seem to enjoy,” Hannah says. “Mac is very outgoing. He’s kind of like the alpha dog between the two. He’s the more dominate one and Tuck is a little bit more shy, but once you get to know him he will actually come out to you and he’s very sweet. I love them both and I feel like tuck is like a toddler and mac would be like a teenager.”
Parker Hudson is in charge of the life support systems at the Delmarva Discovery Center. He talks about putting the otter exhibit together and says the otters enjoy the water slide.
Hannah says the otters are a great experience for kids and adults who visit the Delmarva Discovery Center.
