As the holidays are approaching, many of us are thinking about all the traditions we carryout each year. Maybe you put the Christmas tree up surrounded by family and friends, travel to Grandma’s where she cooks the best turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, or maybe you and the family head to see the Winterfestival of lights each year. If you work at the Acorn Market in Salisbury, Md., your holiday traditions might include baking sweet potato biscuits by the dozens.
Nicholas Colletti and Christine Braughler are Co-Owners of the Acorn Market. A lady named Jill opened the little market 6 years ago, and Nick and Christine bought it a little over two and a half years ago.

During the holiday season, the Acorn Market is busy baking sweet potato biscuits starting at 5:30 a.m.
“We bake about 6-8 dozen in the morning. We also have to bake everything in our baking case as well, which includes cookies and cakes, he says.”
Nick says for Thanksgiving alone, they make 200 dozen biscuits. He says the biscuits are made with fresh, all natural ingredients – and so is the rest of their food.
The most popular thing that they sell for lunch is chicken salad. Nick says they are always busy at lunch time. “Usually from 11:30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m., we are packed.” They do a lot of call-ins and lunch catering for businesses in the area.

They also do catering for special events. “We cater the Christmas party for Pohanka for 250 people. We go a little higher end with steamed shrimp and crab dip and we actually work their event keeping it going,” Nick says.
The Acorn Market is also open for breakfast where they sell danishes and coffee. “We have some scones and muffins, but we don’t do egg sandwiches – not yet.”

The holidays aren’t the only time you can get the popular Acorn Market sweet potato biscuits. If you’re lucky, you can get them everyday. “Usually, we have sweet potato biscuits everyday. But here lately, they are usually reserved and gone before we even open the doors,” Nick says.
Nick loves his job and says the people who come in daily and his co-workers are the reason. “The people. I love ’em. There is a specific couple that comes in here on a specific day. I know that every time they come they are going to get two salmon salads, two cups of water, and two bags of kettle cooked chips. I just know it. I know that there is a local architect who is going to get a chicken salad sandwich on rye bread. I enjoy that. I enjoy seeing the people. I love the people that work here. They’re like family.”
They will take orders for sweet potato biscuits four days prior to Christmas, so reserve your orders now!
