The journey from diagnosis to recovery can be frightening for anyone suffering from a heart disease especially if the diagnosis came on suddenly. Doctors and other healthcare providers are trained to take care of the physical needs but did you know there are another group of trained volunteers that take care of the emotional needs? They are part of a group called Mended Hearts of Delmarva.
Each week Ron and Heather Michaud make time to got to the cardiac unit at PRMC. They are not patient nor healthcare professionals, but what they do is vital to many heart disease patients. 11 years ago Ron received a heart transplant after several heart surgeries. Ron and Heather say they want to help others on the recovery process that they experienced 35 years ago. One of the reasons they still wanted to participate is to make it easier for the ones who are facing these issues and bond with patients on a personal level knowing how difficult it can be to face on their own.
Ron says not everyone is receptive to their visits, but they want everyone to know they are there if needed because it really is all about the patient.
