The Event
The Eastern Shore is full of soccer fans, dock bar lovers, and of course, a good cause. What better way to support a good cause than by visiting Brew River Restaurant and Bar’sguest bartending night for Cystic Fibrosis.
Tisha Venturini-Hoch is a former American soccer player and current National Spokesperson for Produce for Better Health. Many may know of Venturini for winnning a gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, as well as being a world champion in 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in the U.S. After many years of winning world titles, Tisha will now be trying on her guest bartending hat for this event.
Brew River’s Owner Wes Hanna says this event should yield a great turn out because so many people in the area have been willing to support this cause.
“This is a charity that we work with often in the area; it supports Corey and Jenna Hoch from the Hoch family,” Hanna said. “Their son was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, he’s still very young so that’s the charity side of it.”
This is also the cause that Brew River donates to for their annual Team Keller Golf Classic to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. According to Hanna, Venturini is a close relative of the Hoch family and she was more than willing to come out.
Brew River will be donating a portion of anything that is purchased at the time of the event. There will also be a booth set up for donations; patrons are able to take a picture with the ’96 Olympic Gold Medal for a small $5 donation.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?
According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, CF is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation says in people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
Symptoms of CF
People with CF can have a variety of symptoms, including:
- Very salty-tasting skin
- Persistent coughing, at times with phlegm
- Frequent lung infections including pneumonia or bronchitis
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
- Poor growth or weight gain in spite of a good appetite
- Frequent greasy, bulky stools or difficulty with bowel movements
- Male infertility

Who is Tisha Venturini-Hoch?
Born in California, Venturini switched coasts and attended the University of North Carolina, enjoying her college days as a Tar Heel, celebrating her title as an NCAA Champion in 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. Venturini is the only athlete in any sport to ever hold all five titles as
1) a Collegiate Champion at University of North Carolina,
2) a four-time NCAA National Champion at University of North Carolina,
3) a World Cup Champion in 1999,
4) an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1996,
5) a Professional Champion at Bay Area CyberRays in 2001.
In two FIFA Women’s World Cup: Sweden 1995 and USA 1999; and one Olympics: Atlanta 1996 Venturini played 13 matches and scored 7 goals.
Since Venturini’s career as a professional soccer player, she has assumed the responsibility of National Spokesperson for Produce for Better Health. At PBH, Venturini strives to foster an environment where people can include fruits and vegetables at every eating occasion. PBH serves as a “go-to” resource for fruit and vegetable marketing and education.
Venturini has a strong passion for health and helping her in-laws raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.
