German food, décor and music aren’t the norm when it comes to most universities, but it was different this Wednesday, Oct. 12, for Salisbury University.
The German Club along with Salisbury University hosted its 44th annual Oktoberfest event at the Fulton Hall Fountain and Lawn.
The event acts as the club’s main fundraiser event for the entire year. As such, German Club President Kathryn Jedlicka felt it was important to put on the best event they could.
“It’s our biggest event all year,” Jedlicka said. “We start preparing as soon as we can for the event because we know it’s an important event for not only the German Club but also Salisbury University in general.”
Students, club representatives and professors alike visited the event for the variety of German food, drinks, games and songs on display for visitors.
“We’re not DJing today, but we’re still here to give our support,” WXSU Representative Caleb Graham said. “We want to make a good presence for not only us but also the German Club and Salisbury University as a whole.”
The event tries to mirror the actual Oktoberfest as best it can. With authentic German foods like bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad as well as beer for participants of age.
German Club Advisor Charles Overholt thought him and his club members did a pretty good job this year at creating a good replica of what the real Oktoberfest would be like.
“I’ve been to the real Oktoberfest and I think it’s a pretty good representation given what we can do,” Overholt said. “We’re missing the larger than life crowds and drunk people, but I think this is about as close as we can get.”
Jedlicka was happy with the clubs results when it came to recreating the real Oktoberfest, but was still hoping to improve for next years event.
“We wish we could make it as big as the actual Oktoberfest,” Jedlicka said. “We’re on a budget however so we do the best we can to be as representative of the culture and the real event as possible.”
