High temperatures around the country are costing homeowners thousands of dollars. But why?
It’s due to solar distortion. Vinyl siding can melt because of reflected sunlight off of your neighbor’s windows. The Low-E windows act as a magnifying glass, bouncing the sun’s rays onto next-door houses.
Siding professional Judd Haag says when the angle of the sun and the time of day are just right, the damage occurs.

Angie said many vinyl siding companies have begun to remove damage from Low-E window reflection from their warranties, and homeowners are finding themselves stuck. If in a newer home, people are encouraged to speak with their building companies to see if there is a solution.
But many are left to find their own, often expensive, solutions. Experts recommend installing window screens, which minimize reflection and do not make a big difference when viewing from inside the home.
Still, with the low cost of vinyl siding, it’s a problem that may only continue to grow. Haag says builders are going to want to keep costs down, and customers are going to see the effects of solar distortion more and more.
