94-year-old Edith Traina is a power lifter who is pushing to get other older people sweating. These women live by themselves, drive, participate in events at their senior center and compete in their hometown’s “Senior Games” every year. They are full of life and energy and not letting age slow them down.

Maybe you’re not looking to lift weights like the women we just met, but you still want to maintain an active lifestyle. Physical therapy can go a long way in helping you get moving again. After you leave physical therapy, you may want to look into restorative therapy. Sean Streicher stopped by Hermitage on the Eastern Shore to find out how this combination of therapies is keeping their residents in motion.

Physical Therapist, Danielle Mosher says the most important thing they are doing for their patients is that they try to keep patients as independently mobile as possible within their lifespan. They start with low level activities and then try to help them regain their strength. They work on balance, range of motion, strength, and endurance.

After the physical therapy is complete, a restorative therapist helps maximize their strength and mobility. Danielle says without that restorative therapy, they may not know the level of activity that they need in order to maintain independence.
