On Monday, May 16, students from The Salisbury School and Warwick Elementary received a VIP tour of the Salisbury Zoo, a meet and greet with Zookeepers and a pizza party.
This special trip to the zoo was made possible through the Just Zoo It program, a non-profit that raises money for capital improvement projects at the Salisbury Zoo.
Cathy Basset works with the Delmarva Zoological Society and says the Just Zoo It program is something students across the Lower Shore look forward to each year.
“It is to encourage kids in our community to help give back to the zoo. The Just Zoo It program has been a tremendous success—it has been so gratifying to see kids go out and collect coins in these little cans that we create for them and it’s helped raise over $120,000 for the Salisbury Zoo.”
Basset says this is the fifth year students from across the Lower Shore have collected coins and cash for the program. Stephanie Krisulevicz’s 5th grade class from The Salisbury School raised $963.25 in nickels, dimes and quarters, putting them in first place.
Krisulevicz’s students were able to enter the alpaca exhibit at the zoo and feed the pelicans. Joshua Collins, a 5th grader at The Salisbury School, says he had a great day.
“We fed pelicans and it was very cool and I figured out they are very good at catching, and the way they open their mouth, they have a big mouth,” Collins said.
The Salisbury Zoo is a free resource, open seven days a week with free admission and parking, making it one of only a handful in North America that are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
