Not everyone can afford to spend a lot of money on the prom, but that shouldn’t keep them from going to the event. Your Sister’s Closet is a local organization that can help with one of the biggest expenses – the dress.
Your Sister’s Closet is a project of Soroptimist International and Soroptimist President Mary Borger joins us in the DelmarvaLife studio to tell us more.
Your Sister's Closet with Mary Borger
Soroptimist International is an international women’s organization. Their goal is to help local women and girls and they focus on everything from self-esteem to domestic violence. Mary said the group started Your Sister’s Closet about 7-8 years ago to offer prom dresses for girls for their high school prom.
Mary said it has turned into something much bigger. Any woman can rent dresses. It’s $25 to rent a dress and when students bring it back, they get $10 back. They do not have to dry clean the dresses before returning them. Mary says they have sizes 0 to 30 and they also have mother-of-the-bride dresses. All the dresses are donated.
“There was one girl that broke down in tears because she had never been able to go to prom because she couldn’t afford a dress,” Mary says.
Your Sister’s Closet is located in Seaford, Del. and you can call for more information – 302-362-7247. They are open every Saturday until May 28, 10 am – 2 pm.
