Mill Ponds on Delmarva

WBOC’s Brittany Cooper talks with Jimmy and Lisa about how mill ponds on Delmarva need improvement.

Originally, the towns were built around the mill ponds in the 1800’s and they were used to harness water to create power. They were able to use the mill ponds for agricultural services among other things.

Trap Pond State Park in Laurel, Del. was once just strictly a mill pond. They saved the man-made dam and created a very popular recreational spot where locals fish and boat.

The Bishopville dam has a muck build-up at a mill pond there and the fish and eels are dying because of it.

Death of Downtown

Brittany tells us about the Western Sussex County downtowns of Delmar, Seaford, Bridgeville, and Laurel and how they used to be thriving places.

Brittany talked to people about the downtown areas back when it was booming and what they see today as fair as deterioration or as the railroad and Rt. 13 came along, and what it did to businesses.

We also learn about what the towns are doing to revive these downtown areas for the future. Check out Brittany’s Death of Downtown story.
