WBOC’s Mike Chesney talked to the festival director about how some Firefly performances are being broadcast nationwide:
Firefly took a major step forward this year in terms of its national visibility. It’s a step that extended its reach beyond Dover.
The event is on TV now in a way it never has been before.
WBOC has been covering the event for four years now, so have other local TV stations. But this year, for the first time performances, the shows themselves are being broadcast nationwide.
AXS TV, a cable channel, has been doing live coverage of lots of the biggest shows.
That includes bands like Walk the Moon and Foster the People. However, it does not include headliners – Paul McCartney and The Killers.
But the point is nationwide broadcast of any part of Firefly is a big deal.
“We’ve always thought people just need The Woodlands to get what this event is,” said Greg Bostrom, the festival’s director. “You need to be here to fully understand the experience. This is going to help get Firefly into the homes of people all over the country, who either haven’t of it or haven’t had the ability to travel to it.”
A spokesman for AXS tells WBOC the channel reaches 43 million people nationwide.
