National Parks wave entrance fees to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.

On Monday, Jan. 16, the National Park Service is waving all entrance fees for national parks that normally charge an entrance fee, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday, observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King’s birthday, January 15.

Other NPS entrance fee-free dates in 2017 include February 20 – Presidents’ Day, April 15 – 16 and 22 – 23 – Weekends of National Park Week, August 25 – National Park Service Birthday, September 30 – National Public Lands Day and November 11 – 12 – Veterans Day Weekend.

There are more than 400 national parks available to the public across the United States. According to NPS, ‘the fee-free days provides a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the 120 national parks that normally charge an entrance fee.’

The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.
