It’s easy to get caught up in the material side of the Christmas season, but as the holiday gets closer, everyone really starts to reflect on why we celebrate during the holiday season.
Loving one another and reaching out beyond our walls to help one another is a year-round mission of Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford.
The history of Avenue United Methodist Church goes all the way back to 1784 when Frances Asbury and Thomas Coke formed the Methodist Episcopal Church. That’s when Avenue UMC became a charter member of America’s first denomination.
The current building is the fourth and was built in 1939. Tom Pasmore, senior pastor, says the congregation has been active in the community for over 200 years.
Under the direction of Pastor Tom and Associate Pastor, Wendy Owen, the church remains a cornerstone in the Milford community.
“The priorities of Avenue United Methodist Church are to really reach out into this community, so we do a lot of things with Code Purple and the food pantry,” Wendy says.
As much as Avenue United Methodist Church is reaching out to those in need, there’s an open invitation to step inside and find sanctuary.
“We try to affect people who are on the fringes or are on the margins. We are excited about the new cold weather shelter, code purple that we’ve opened this year,” Pastor Tom says. “We are excited about opportunities to reach out into the community and we’re looking forward to other ways we can be involved in people’s lives here in Milford.”
There is an outreach program for the youth led by Cliff McCall. He says upwards of 60 kids call Avenue their church home on Sunday evenings. Avenue United Methodist Church also has a strong music ministry led by Kevin Chamberlain and offers something for everyone’s worship needs.
