Storm damage can affect your home and family long after the storm is over – especially if that damage is done underneath your home in the crawl space.
Jay Wilkins of Critter Getters in Salisbury said standing water can create a myriad of problems, including pests.
“It has a lot to do with how a property is graded, where the run off is going,” said Wilkins. “A lot of times, people don’t understand that it [water] is running directly right under the home.”
That is why a crawl space encapsulation from Critter Getters offers comprehensive protection for your home. In addition to creating a breeding ground for termites and other pests, Wilkins says water in the crawl space can also lead to something called “brown rot fungus,” a wood-destroying organism that also creates airborne spores that can make their way into your living space.
As part of the encapsulation process, Critter Getters installs pumps, drain systems, and dehumidifiers to remove any standing water and moisture from under the house. Liners are also installed on the floor and any piers or interior walls. Exterior facing walls are covered with Bora-Foam. Wilkins says this is important for termite treatment because the foam is infused with Borite.
Wilkins points out that Bora-Foam is a patented material only sold to pest control companies that stops termites in their tracks.
Once the materials are installed to encapsulate the crawl space, the work is not done. Critter Getters will also take extra measure to keep the space dry and pest free through humidity control.
“Some people encapsulate and don’t treat that,” said Wilkins. “As long as you are controlling the environment, the fungus at that point, stays dormant.”
Wilkins says customers report that their HVAC unit runs more efficiently after the encapsulation.
