Chances are, you have experienced some sort of back pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four U.S. adults say they suffered a day-long bout of pain in the past month.
One in ten say the pain lasted a year or more and the older you are, the higher your chances of getting the common ache. That doesn’t mean you have to live with it for the rest of your life.
The doctors at Delmarva Chiropractic in Salisbury, Md. are providing relief using an old therapy with a modern twist.
Dr. Kevin L. McKamey says that non-surgical decompression is a way to put traction along the structures of the person’s spine to bring a negative disc pressure. Dr. McKamey says creating decompression of the spine helps patients who suffer from pain caused by bulging discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and sciatica.
“Gravity exerts a certain amount of pressure on all of us, so an upright posture, and the weight of our body, putting pressure along the structures of our spine put pressure on the disc itself which is the shock absorber between the bones,” Dr. McKamey says.
Dr. McKamey says the time it takes for this procedure depends on the patient’s condition. He says it could take anywhere from 8-23 minutes. A treatment plan usually involves four sessions in the first week, three times in the second week, and three times in the third week.
“Depending on how the patient responds and depending on the severity of the condition, some conditions are resolved in as few as ten to twelve treatments and some may take longer,” Dr. McKamey says.
Lisa asked Dr. McKamey at what point should you have back pain addressed by a doctor. He said if you treat it with ice, heat and maybe stretch it, and it persists past 72 hours, then you should have it evaluated.
