Every 34 seconds, someone in this country suffers a heart attack.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center Cardiologist, Dr. Jeffrey Wieland, stops by the studio to talk about risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack, and treatment options.
Symptoms of Heart Attack:
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Upper body discomfort
- Shortness of breath
Other possible symptoms:
- Breaking out in a cold sweat
- Feeling unusually tired
- Nausea – indigestion- vomiting
- Light headedness or sudden dizziness
- Any sudden, new symptoms or a change in the pattern of symptoms
Dr, Wieland says if you think you’re having a heart attack, call 911 right away.
Risk factors you cannot control:
- Age – the risk increases for men after age 45 and for women after age 55
- Family history
- Preeclampsia
Risk factors you can control:
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- High blood cholesterol
- Overweight and obesity
- Unhealthy diet
- Lack of physical activity
- High blood sugar
