For many people diagnosed with breast cancer, their journey starts after getting a mammogram.
However, a mammogram isn’t something women should fear. In fact, it can play a huge role in saving a life. Sandra Heineken, manager of oncology clinical research with Peninsula Breast Center, helps clear up any misconceptions regarding mammograms.
A mammogram can detect many different things. Sandra says many women that come in to get a mammogram are already aware of lumps on their breasts.
Sandra says women should get a mammogram at the age of 40-years-old, unless your family has a history of breast cancer. Sandra says she doesn’t think there is any problem with getting it done earlier than 40-years-old.
Sandra says the procedure may cause a little pain or be uncomfortable, but it is so important to get a mammogram. It’s also important to examine breasts regularly for lumps so that if something is different you know it and can detect it early.
