Losing a child has to be one of the most unbearable heartaches a person can endure.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center is helping to honor those precious lives with “Special Treasures are Remembered” (STAR) program.
Marianne Harvey with PRMC talks about child loss and what PRMC is doing to honor the lives lost.
“The national statistics right now say that one in four pregnancies will end in a loss. Still birth is about 1%-2% of pregnancies, but miscarriage is the biggest complication of pregnancy. 15%-25% of pregnancies will end in a miscarriage usually in the first trimester, sometimes in the second,” Marianne says.
The STAR program supports the families going through such tragedies. Marianne says there are 400 families in the STAR program.
PRMC is holding a STAR Remembrance Walk. It takes place Saturday, Oct. 15 at Avery W. Hall Educational Center Auditorium. The walk starts at 2 p.m., and will include guided tours of the new STAR Memorial Room at PRMC, a quiet place to honor the young lives lost.
National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is observed annually in the United States on October 15. It is a day of remembrance observed with ceremonies and candle lighting vigils throughout the nation. The Medical Center’s entrances will be lit in pink and blue for the evening as part of the observance’s “Wave of Light,” in which people in all time zones are encouraged to light a candle at 7 p.m. as an act of remembrance.
