It happens everyday. A woman finds out she’s expecting when she least expects it. But an unplanned pregnancy can bring social and economic costs through immediate and long-term impacts – especially for teen parents. In some areas of Delmarva, where nearly half of all children live at, or below the poverty level, those impacts can be even greater.
That’s where the Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center in Berlin, Md. comes in. Its mission is to help not only teen parents, but all women and men who find themselves taking on a new role – parenthood.
We hear the story of Liz Glorioso and how she took her first step into the center to find out if she was pregnant or not. Liz realized the Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center was where she belonged.
Executive Director, Lisa Wilgus, tells all about what the Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center has to offer. Liz says she enjoys the emotional support offered in the young mothers support group.
“The women here are amazing. It is just a wonderful group of experienced moms – moms who have been through way more than I have obviously,” Liz says. “They have the warmest hearts that I have ever been able to see for myself and I’m glad that I was brought here because I don’t know where I would be without them.”
Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center emphasizes educating women on all options when it comes to unplanned pregnancy. Lisa adds their job is to educate women, empower them, and equip them to make healthy life decisions so we can have healthier families in our community.
