People get into martial arts for all sorts of reasons, from self-defense to exercise, and even just for fun.
Sean stopped by Southside Jiu Jitsu Club to find out a little more about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Owner and Head Instructor of Southside Jiu Jitsu, Miles Moffit has been practicing martial arts for over 40 years. He says Jiu Jitsu is is a grappling form much like wrestling and in the sport of Jiu Jitsu, there is no punching or kicking.
Some of the benefits would be physical fitness and the functionality of self-defense which you can carry it with you for the rest of your life. The sport of Jiu Jitsu is where you compete for medals with time limits as well as age and belt divisions.

Miles teaches little kids all the way up to senior citizen. He works with a lot of children and says Jiu Jitsu is a great form of discipline as well.
“I work with a lot of children. You have timid children, you have aggressive children. After a year or two, their personalities all start to become the same,” Miles says. “There’s a certain amount of humility you suffer and paying your dues so to speak and you start to change your character after awhile. You become very humble.”
Miles teaches women’s self-defense at Southside Jiu Jitsu and says it’s a very popular class. He takes a couple minutes to show WBOC’s Interactive Marketing Coordinator, Lauren Hitch, some self-defense moves that he teaches in his classes.
