Tidemark Federal Credit Union joins us from the classroom talking about financial literacy.

Dana Shelton, Woodbridge High School finance teacher, tells us about the academy of finance course that Woodbridge offers their students. Dana says they have teamed up with Tidemark Federal Credit Union to be an adviser to their students.

“We’re teaching out students to be financially literate. We want them to be able to understand FICO scores, to understand banks and credit bureaus and how they work. We want them to understand their credit and debt,” Dana says. “76% of the people in this country basically live paycheck to paycheck and we want to make sure our students understand how to budget their money and how to spend it wisely.”

Kelsey Dunn with Tidemark Federal Credit Union says it is really important to Tidemark for them to get involved with the students before they of age to have a checking account or a credit card.

“We set them up for success. We can have them come in and have their first checking account with us, their first auto loan, their first mortgage,” Kelsey says. “We hope to develop that relationship.”

The students also tell us what they are learning about managing their finances.
