Since we are turning off our AC units, they might use a little TLC before we switch on the heat.
Bringing in a professional to perform fall maintenance has all types of benefits. From saving you money, to catching a problem before it turns into something major.
Sean met with the professionals to find out what they’re on the look out for when they service your HVAC system.
“If I had to relate it to something, I would relate your HVAC system to a car. You get your oil changed in your car every 3000 miles while your HVAC system you should have serviced in the spring and the fall. Now is the time to think about it before the cold snap gets here and our phones are ringing off the hook,” says Leif Hancock, owner of Hancock and Sons Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning.
Leif says the first thing they do when they perform fall maintenance is something that most homeowners can do on their own.
“The filter is something that most people should be changing themselves on a monthly basement basis and if they can’t, they can call us and we can assist them in changing that on a monthly basis,” Leif says.

The next step is to check the actual unit to be sure there is no debris or anything blocking the fans. The professionals also check the refrigeration process and levels, as well as the system’s electrical components. Leif says one of the most important things they check is known as the Delta-T.
“You can only achieve a certain Delta T which is the difference in temperature. Meaning you have one temperature coming back to the return and a different temperature once it comes out of the heating unit that’s called your Delta-T. You want your output temperature to be as high as possible because that’s what keeps you warm,” Leif says.
In the end, fall maintenance can help your system run more efficient and help you avoid a headache down the road.
