Sand, sun and fun are all goals for the annual Sandcastle & Sculpture Contest in Rehoboth Beach.

The 38th annual Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce Sandcastle & Sculpture Contest will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10 on the beach between Brooklyn Ave. and Hickman St.

According to RBDBCC President and CEO, Carol Everhart, the family-oriented event changed its date to help draw more people.

“We have adjusted the schedule and location which we hope will encourage more participation, we hope it will make it easier for the families to enjoy,” Everhart says.

RBDBCC has joined efforts with Funland to host the event on the amusement park’s last open day of the season. In addition to the date change, the contest has added more crafts, prizes and giveaways.

This years prizes will be awarded to the top 10 ‘Judge’s Favorites’ in both the adult and 7-14 child divisions. One ‘Judge’s Favorite’ will be awarded in the ‘Business’ category and special awards will be given to all participants in the child’s division. The public can vote on their favorite adult and child division creation for the People’s Choice Awards.

According to Everhart, more than 100 teams are expected to participate. In past years, the town has seen creations from swamp animals, mermaids, pyramids, crabs, dolphins, sharks, and of course, traditional sandcastles.

This years categories are Business, Adult (15 and older), Children (7-14) and Child (6 and under).

“It’s in categories so age groups are separated and everybody has a fair chance of their artistry being categorized,” Everhart says.

Entries will be judged on ‘Structural Engineering,’ ‘Use of Materials,’ ‘Imagination,’ ‘Overall Aesthetic Appeal,’ and ‘Representation of Business.’

Sculptures may be started at any time on the day of competition, but must be completed for judging by 3 p.m. Participants may register their entry anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and winners will be announced at approximately 5:00 p.m.

For those interested in spectating, the event is free of charge. According to Everhart, the best time to watch is around noon when the participants will be at the ‘height of building.’
