A Sussex County tradition more than 50 years old.
On Friday, Nov. 25, Santa’s House on the Boardwalk opened its door to the public in Rehoboth Beach, Del. The tradition has welcomed Sussex County residents and visitors to the beach for more than 50 years.
Santa’s House has been underneath the tree in Rehoboth Beach, on the sidewalk and by the new Rehoboth Beach Bandstand but organizers believe it has found its forever home on Rehoboth Avenue at the boardwalk.
“Santa’s House moved to the boardwalk more than eight years ago,” Carol Everhart, Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce executive director, says. “It has done really well there.”
The donation based house gives families and friends at the beach for the holidays a chance to get there photos taken with Santa. Those who wish to have their photos taken must bring their own camera – cell phone, digital, disposable – and take the photo themselves.
In addition to Santa’s House, each year the chamber sets up a mailbox for children to leave letters for Santa, which Everhart says is a big hit.

Santa’s House, as well as the Rehoboth Beach Tree Lighting, is put on by the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce.
“Families love it and we’re just happy to be able to provide it” Everhart says.
On opening weekend, Santa’s House had more than 1,000 children go through on Friday night alone.
