We have a very interesting collection to share with you in this show and tell segment.
They go by many names but you’d probably know them best as Russian nesting dolls. Sean stops by Ocean Pines to talk with Mary Novak, who has been collecting them for nearly 25 years.
Mary used to collect music boxes and once she had no room to collect them anymore, she started collecting the nesting dolls.
A Russian monk started making these in Japan. They are hand-carved and made out of wood. The Russian nesting dolls take two years to make because they let the wood try out after cutting it.
Mary says they start with the smallest nesting doll first and then makes the next one bigger. The smaller dolls fit inside the bigger doll, and so forth.
All of the dolls Mary has are labeled for where they were made. Mary’s grandparents are from Russia so her ever-growing collection means so much to her.
