Nearly 1 million Americans attempt suicide every year. The World Health Organization reports that more people die from suicide than from conflicts, wars, and natural disasters combined.

WBOC’s 4 p.m. producer Lauren Lins is doing an overnight walk in Boston, MA. on June 27. Lins says, “Suicide is a serious problem and it’s something my family and I struggle with everyday. So I do what I can to give back and to help other people.” The Out of the Darkness Overnight Experience is an 16-18 mile walk over the course of one night.
The opening ceremonies for the Overnight Walk begin as the sun sets where people can meet and share their stories. Each persons story may not be the same as the next, but they are all there for the same thing – to take a stand against suicide.
Net proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, funding research, advocacy, survivor support, education, and awareness programs – both to prevent suicide and to assist those affected by suicide. The walks raise awareness about depression and suicide, and provide comfort to those who have lost someone to suicide.
Raising Money for Suicide Prevention Through Painting
On Saturday, June 6 from 1-4 p.m., at Brew River Restaurant and Bar in Salisbury, Md., Lauren is hosting a Wine and Canvas event to raise money for suicide prevention. The price per seat is $35, with $10 of that going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
A Wine & Canvas event is where you can get a group of friends together to paint and drink a bottle of wine, or two. A local artist gives step-by-step instructions to help you create a masterpiece. Even customers who have no painting experience can do this with ease and it is just a good time for everyone. And in this case, a portion of the money goes to a great foundation.
