Last month we had Joy Quinn-Whalen of The Spice and Tea Exchange on the show and she showed us how to make compound butters and lots of delicious dips. The store has 65 spice blends and 35 teas, so it’s offering classes to learn how to use the products. The Cooking Creation Class will be offered once a month from January to April starting on January 16. To reserve a seat, and for more information, call 443-664-5822. Each class focuses on different flavors and food:
- Jan 16 – Brunch Musts, brunch menu stepped up with inclusion of new flavors
- Feb. 13 – Meat Musts, how to use smoke, spice and sweet to turn meat into miracle
- Mar. 13 – Down on the Docks, seafood + herb/spice
- Apr. 10 – Farm to Table Feast, use local ingredients + local store’s herbs and spices
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is right around the corner and there are a couple events in the area you can attend:
- Jan. 16, 8:3 0 a.m. – 31st Annual Youth Activity presented by the Salisbury High School Association at the Wicomico Civic Center
- Jan. 16, 6:30 p.m. – 32nd Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration and Commemoration Banquet at the Wicomico Civic Center
- Jan. 14 – Jan. 16 – 25th Annual Commemorative Weekend Celebration in honor of the late civil rights leader begins Sat., Jan. 14. Festivities will begin with a parade at 11 a.m. in Lewes followed by a banquet at 4:30 p.m. at the Cheer Center in Georgetown. The celebration will conclude on Monday with a 10 a.m. community worship service at Christ’s Church in Harbeson. Today is the last day to get your tickets for this event – no tickets are sold at the door. Last month, Charlie Paparella showed us some really interesting old books about Delmarva. We asked our viewers if they had anything to share with us for show and tell. That’s how we found out about Frank Brown and his model trains. Sean visits Frank’s house in Ocean Pines today to check out his train collection. John Reisinger of Easton, author of the book, “The Secrets Behind the Structures,” joins us today. The book is about buildings and other structures -especially famous ones – that have fascinating and bizarre stories behind them that most people don’t know. Two of the structures John refers to in his book are local – the Bay Bridge and the Holland Island Bar Light in the Chesapeake Bay. “The Secrets Behind the Structures” will be released later this year.
Depending on where you live, or where you’re from, you may have a different dialect that someone else. We’re have fun with words in today’s What’s Appening segment. Ashlie Kozlowski, outreach coordinator of the Assateague Island Alliance, tells us about an app that is dedicated to the Assateague Island ponies. The Wild Horse Identification app is a free app that will give visitors the opportunity to correctly identify individual horses among the Maryland herd by taking a photograph on their smartphone. The app caters to the younger generation by providing information at their fingertips. This app will utilize visual recognition software and a short series of questions when necessary to provide specific information about the horses the public are encountering during their visit. Ashlie says they hope to launch the app by Spring 2017.
Sometimes we take for granted the senses most of us depend on everyday – sight, hearing, smell, and touch. Imagine your life without experiencing one of those senses. It’s a reality for one million people in the world who are considered deaf. Deaf Independent Living Association, or DILA, is a group on Delmarva that strives to support the deaf and ensure they have equal access to their community. Mike Purkey, executive director of DILA, tells us how they support the deaf.
