Today on DelmarvaLife:

People of Delmarva are selfless, giving and kind. Vice President of Heroes Haven on the Eastern Shore, Darryl English, and Ellen Bethel join us to talk about the mission of Heroes Haven. There is an upcoming event on Feb. 9 to support Heroes Haven and Operation We Care. Doors open at 5:30 pm and dinner is at 6 pm at Delmar VFW. For more information, call Ellen at 410-251-1581. The Delmarvalous Dolls join us on the Mid South Audio Stage to give us an example of entertainment you’ll see at the event.

Next month, we celebrate Black History Month, but the history of African Americans here on the Eastern Shore is a rich one that should be celebrated year-round. Both enslaved and free African Americans were vital to the economy here before the Civil War. That’s the subject of the book – “Plantations, Slavery and Freedom on the Eastern Shore” that Author Jacqueline Simmons Hedberg recently wrote. She stops by Historic Studio D to give us an overview of the book and how much research went into telling the story.

Capt. Babe Wilson also has another list of wanted individuals in today’s Most Wanted Monday. If you see someone you know, and you want to be considered for a monetary award, call Crime Solvers. 410-548-1776.

For those who were fortunate enough to go to prom in high school, there are a couple things about the event you may never forget. For the ladies, you probably remember your dress. However, not all young ladies are able to afford a dress for prom. That’s why community organizations are providing dresses for them at a low cost, or no cost at all. Susan Ward, a volunteer with the non-profit organization, “Promise,” tells us about the group and how the community can donate. For more information, or to volunteer, email sward@wcboe.org.

Over the next few weeks, we’re taking trips back in time and getting a look at some of the oldest items you have at home. We recently put out a call on Facebook to show us what you have – a tool, machine, gadget, anything! And we got some great responses. Please continue to do so on the DelmarvaLife Facebook page.

Tanya Sykes of Millsboro, Del. joins us today to tell us more about her grandmother’s Uli Uli instruments.

If you have someone you’d like to celebrate, submit a DelmarvaLife Occasion here. Birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day – DelmarvaLife Occasions makes the perfect gift!
