If you were told that something that could kill you was eighty percent preventable, would you listen? Well, today Jimmy and Lisa were sure to listen in while they learned about strokes, and how eighty percent of strokes are, indeed, preventable. Dr. Richard Bird, a neurologist with Peninsula Regional Medical Center, gave viewers some very important facts on not only how to prevent a stroke, but also how to help others learn to avoid them.

We continued learning how people in our communities are fighting silent killers when we sat down with Connie Holdridge, a breast cancer survivor, as well as Beth Krallis, director of communications at the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Both ladies discussed how the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is working to help survivors, as well as other women learn more about breast cancer. They also talked about the upcoming “DE-Feet Breast Cancer 5k Run/Walk” on Sunday, May 21. The race raises awareness and celebrates those who defeated breast cancer. To learn more about the race, and how to sign up to participate, read more about it here.

DelmarvaLife also reconnected with a guest who came onto the show to share with us the inspiring story of how she overcame the passing of her one-year-old daughter, Alana Rose, while she helped others along the way. Alexa also has some exciting news to share with us! Alexa Shoultes, and Event Coordinator, Katie Green, joined Jimmy and Lisa to discuss how the foundation, set up in Alexa’s late daughter’s name, The Alana Rose Foundation, works to provide help to parents whose child may be suffering from a serious health condition, much like Alana’s. They also told us about the second annual ‘Hitting Fairways for Families‘ event, which will be on June 8, 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. at the Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club in Dagsboro, Delaware. All proceeds raised at the event will help families struggling to balance their child’s illness with financial pressures.
