We hear about concussions happening more and more in young athletes. As we learn more about the effects of concussions on the brain, more focus is being put on monitoring and preventing concussions in high school and youth sports.
Some health professionals are pushing for federal standards for sports injury reporting. Since 2009, every state has passed laws relating to sports injuries – but advocates say very few have enforcement standards. So far, congress has not created a national registry to help tailor treatment and prevention.
The National Institute of Health estimates there are 300,000 sports-related traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. every years. Many of the victims are teenagers, who are often eager to get back in the game.
