DELMAR, Del. - Brandon Mazolla, a firework tenant in Delmar has a lot to be excited about. Not only is it nearing the Fourth of July, but a new law passed in Delaware making sparklers and ground fireworks legal. That is, if you're 18 or older. The fireworks also cannot shoot higher than 15 feet in the air.
Previously, fireworks were illegal throughout the state, which gives a lot of people in Delaware, including those in Sussex County, a lot to look forward to on Independence Day.
"Oh, it's awesome. Everyone else gets to play with fireworks and we just get to sit around watching from thirty feet away and we're not allowed to buy them or bring them back, it's against the law," said Brooke Knox-Smith, who lives in Sussex County.
But others fear making fireworks legal could risk safety.
"People that are experts in fireworks should be setting them off, not just anybody. Too many fires get started that way," said Susan Shade, a resident of Kent County.
According to the newly-introduced legislation, fireworks can only be used legally on the Fourth of July, as well as on New Year's Day.
