Heavy Rains in Delaware May Mean More Mosquitoes

DOVER, Del.- Recent heavy rainfall in Delaware may mean an uptick in mosquitoes during what's been a record season for the flying pests.

Michael Globetti, a Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control spokesman, said the agency was looking on Thursday into how the population of mosquitoes may have been affected by standing water that's accumulated because of recent rain.

But Mary Pritchett of Hartly said she and her grandchildren could tell there was an uptick by the bites they've been getting when they are in the backyard or at the park.

"At our house when we do get to go out in between the rain, there does seem to be a lot more of them than there were before," she said.

Bernard Coleman of Dover said he's been doing everything he can to try and prevent water from building up around his house and the spread of mosquitoes.

"I got flower pots that I keep turning upside down to keep them from collecting water," he said. "But man, they're still very hungry this year."
