Ocean City Elementary School Evacuated After Fire

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Authorities are investigating a fire that broke out shortly before noon Wednesday at Ocean City Elementary School in Ocean City.

According to the Ocean City Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the school for a reported building fire. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Aperance arrived on the scene and confirmed smoke coming from the roof and requested additional units to assist from various Worcester County fire departments. Crews quickly extinguished a fire located in a portion of the roof.

All students and staff were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Worcester County Public Schools officials began dismissing students immediately after the evacuation, with some boarding buses. For all students that needed to be picked up parents/guardians were required bring photo IDs to the OCES campus on Thoroughfare Farms Road, via Golf Course Road.  

There is no word yet on the extent of damage.
