MILTON, Del.- Milton Police Chief Robert J. Longo announced Monday he is stepping down, effective March 15.

Longo, who made the announcement on the Milton Police Department's Facebook page, has served as chief of the department for four years. He said he waited until now to make his announcement public as the department was planning and putting security plans in place for the town's large St. Patrick's Day race and parade.

"During my tenure as police chief we have had numerous improvements, and done great things. Some of our accomplishments at a minimum include purchasing a new fleet of vehicles and other equipment at no cost to the taxpayer. We did this by wisely seeking and using grant funding," Longo said. "Together WE made Milton a safer town! In fact Milton was rated the 2nd safest town 2 years in a row and the SAFEST TOWN when it comes to violent crime for 2020."

There is no word yet on who will serve as acting police chief after Longo steps down.
