Warwick Elementary Receives Award, Hosts Walking Event

SECRETARY, Md.- It was a busy week at Warwick Elementary School where staff received an award and families participated in the annual "Walk to School Day."

School officials say 200 staff, students and parents participated in Walk to School Day Friday. The event promotes physical activity and teaches safe walking skills.

Participants gathered at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and were escorted to school by teachers, parents and sheriff's deputies. The school says many of the walkers ended their trek with breakfast in the school cafeteria.

School officials say they hope more families will be encouraged by the event to park and walk or walk from home on a regular basis.

The school was also visited by staff from Cambridge Wal-Mart on Monday, who recognized the school as recipients of the Teacher Rewards Program for 2014-2015.

Names were drawn for 20 teachers and instructional assistants who received $50 gift cards to Walmart. Other staff members were given gift bags of classroom supplies.

Wal-Mart told staff members the contributions were a thank you for the time and personal funds they put into their classrooms. School officials say the donations were greatly appreciated.
