SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Delaware's House of Representatives welcomes a new member following Thursday's special election. Valerie Jones Giltner emerged victorious, securing representation of the 37th House District encompassing Georgetown, Millsboro and Lewes.

The Georgetown native and retired nurse triumphed in the special election by a nearly 800-vote margin, poised to become a familiar presence in Dover.

"I can sit home and ring my hands and complain about what is going on in Dover or I can take action," Giltner remarked, expressing her motivation for pursuing this political path.

The nomination came from Sussex County GOP Chair Drew Sunderlin, who lauded Giltner's impressive candidacy. Giltner, drawing from her healthcare background, aims to prioritize accessible and affordable healthcare options, while continuing the work championed by her predecessor Ruth Briggs King.

"We've got to address [the] need for safe and secure classrooms for the kids, we need affordable housing—all things we need to support the working family," Giltner added.

The special election results provided some relief to Republicans as Democratic dominance remains strong in the state legislature.

"This seat was going to be two seats away from a supermajority, which means that the Democrats could change the Delaware Constitution... I think the folks of the 37th said we are relevant," Giltner noted.

"She is going to be able to bring something to Dover that will not only enhance what Briggs King did for many years but it will also bring new energy and new passion," Sunderlin commented on Giltner's potential impact.

Looking forward, Giltner said she plans to seek re-election come November.
