A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck western Colombia, killing at least 111 people and damaging hundreds of buildings. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared an emergency to expedite funding for recovery. The quake hit the remote Choco region on Monday and was felt as far as the capital of Bogotá. Soldiers, rescue personnel and families picked through the rubble to find survivors. Families posted information about missing loved ones on citizen-run websites. Colombia's Geological Service says the quake was the country’s strongest this century and was followed by numerous aftershocks. Governments across Latin America and elsewhere have offered to help.
