New laws went into effect all over the country at midnight on January 1st. Provisions of the Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law in July, go into effect this year. This includes tax breaks for overtime and tipped pay. A fire at a resort in the Swiss Alps claimed dozens of lives and injured over 100 people on New Year's Eve.
