PRINCESS ANNE, MD - National technology and security company Peraton has notified the state of Maryland of a mass layoff planned for their location in Somerset County.

According to the Maryland Department of Labor Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) website, Peraton notified the state on April 16 of the impending layoffs of 49 employees in Princess Anne.

The layoffs are set to go into effect on April 30, according to the Maryland WARN system.

It is currently unclear how many jobs will remain at the Princess Anne location after the layoffs. WBOC reached out to Peraton on Tuesday but did not receive an immediate response.

According to a press release, Peraton’s Princess Anne team was involved with designing and manufacturing missile targets used in military defense tests in New Mexico in November of 2024.

“Peraton’s Princess Anne team and its predecessors have supported sounding rocket missions and missile defense target operations for over 25 years. Learn how Peraton continues to provide strategic solutions for our customers’ defense missions,” the press release reads.

In 2023, Peraton announced they had won a competitive award to support the NASA Sounding Rocket Operations Contract IV, a continuation of the company’s relationship with NASA missions at Wallops Flight Facility and Goddard Space Flight Center.

A spokesperson with Goddard Space Flight Center tells WBOC that the Peraton work in Princess Anne is unrelated to Peraton's work at NASA Wallops on the Sounding Rocket Program.

“NSROC IV will continue to be the flagship program of Peraton’s suborbital rocket capabilities that also includes adjacent missions for the DoD and military services,” said Peraton’s Roger Mason, Ph.D., president, Space & Intelligence sector said in 2023. “We’re honored to be a trusted enabler for these key missions and look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with NASA and the Princess Anne region.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
