POCOMOKE CITY, Md. - Worcester County Commissioners met today approving plans to send a letter to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
The letter includes a request from the county to purchase the Pocomoke Welcome Center from the state.
The center is owned by the state, and operated by Worcester County tourism. Worcester county is requesting ownership of the Pocomoke Welcome Center, the first thing travelers see when driving up route 13 from Virginia into Maryland.
Jay Dunlap travels from the Outer Banks to Philadelphia to visit his grandchildren. He says he makes the drive often, making the welcome center a valuable source.
“It’s convenient, and I really hope they stay in business because it’s a really good stop,” he says.
The County's Chief Administrative Officer Weston Young says the building is aging, and they've gotten complaints about the bathrooms as well.
“If we can renovate and improve the facility to give a better user experience, visitor experience,” he says. “That's that's the ultimate goal is we want people to come visit, work, play, live in Worcester County.”
Young says the request needs to go through the Maryland department of general services first.
After that, the request will go to the Board of Public Works, where the Governor, Comptroller and Treasurer will need to vote on parting with the property.
There is no set timeline as to when this request will be accepted.
