Gaithersburg, Maryland Jul 25, 2026 (Issuewire.com) Amar Mukunda has won the Democratic nomination for Maryland State Senate in District 39, following a grassroots campaign that brought together thousands of residents around the belief that it is time for bold and decisive change in Maryland.
Mukunda defeated Senate Majority Leader Nancy King in a decisive upset. In official final results, with all 32 of 32 election day precincts reporting, Mukunda won by nearly 12 points with 48.86% of the total vote, with King and West trailing at 37.18% and 13.96% respectively. The campaign focused on speaking directly with voters about ending corporate influence in our politics, enacting universal healthcare, extending the Red Line to Germantown, and guaranteeing opportunity for every child.
This campaign was not about me, nor was it about Senator King's dedication and service to our community. It was a movement of people willing to say the obvious: our politics are stuck, the way we do things has to change, and Annapolis must deliver better results.
The real work starts now. Too many successful campaigns fail to enact meaningful change because the organizing stops after Election Day. So, to every volunteer who knocked on doors, every supporter who made calls, and every person who hosted an event: we are so grateful, and we have to keep going.
The Mukunda campaign's success hinged on not accepting the status quo even when it comes to how to run for office. Mukunda did not accept corporate PAC or lobbyist money, hired no consultants, ran no polls, and took no endorsements from unions or other politicians. Instead, the campaign focused relentlessly on building the largest volunteer-driven effort the district has seen in years.
We are going into office with no strings attached. We are genuinely blessed to have won this way because we represent the people of District 39 and no one else. Over the course of our campaign, we had over 10,000 face-to-face conversations with voters. What people want does not fit neatly into one ideological box. The solutions are not solely liberal, progressive, conservative or libertarian. We have a clear mandate to end corporate influence in politics, enact universal healthcare and extend the Red Line to Germantown. At the same time, we have an equally clear mandate to create high-paying jobs, cut spending waste and inefficiencies in government permitting, and make home and small business ownership more accessible.
Mukunda thanked Senator Nancy King for her decades of service to Montgomery County and congratulated fellow candidate Destiny Drake West on a hard-fought campaign.
About the outgoing incumbent, Mukunda said, Senator King has been a dedicated public servant. She cares deeply about our community and especially our schools and our young people. I am hopeful that I can learn from her experience and relationships to deliver for the community we both love.
A Montgomery County native, Army Reserve combat engineer, entrepreneur, and gun violence prevention advocate, Mukunda will become one of the youngest members of the Maryland Senate and the first South Asian state senator in Maryland history.
